ūrdhva-mūlam adhaḥ-śākham aśvatthaṁ prāhur avyayam | Above its roots, below its branches — the ancient undecaying banyan tree. chandāṁsi yasya parṇāni yas taṁ veda sa veda-vit || The rhymes of intention are its leaves. Who knows this — is the knower of the Vedas. na rūpam asyeha tathopalabhyate nānto na cādir na ca sampratiṣṭhā | Its form is not grasped in the world of becoming. Nor its end, nor its origin, nor its full foundations. aśvattham enaṁ suvirūḍha-mūlam asaṅga-śastreṇa dṛḍhena chittvā || The roots of this banyan tree are exceptionally well-formed, cut with the weapon of determined non-association. tataḥ padaṁ tat parimārgitavyaṁ yasmin gatā na nivartanti bhūyaḥ | Having fared the total journey to this abode, there gone, one returns not to the pattern loops. tam eva cādyaṁ puruṣaṁ prapadye yataḥ pravṛttiḥ prasṛtā purāṇī || There, in the refuge of the source in-dweller, whence extend these primeval compositions.
In simple terms — the dude abides beyond the pattern matrix. Not entering the loops of intention and attachment. Detached from the framework of conditions and compulsions, engaged yet aloof, detached in action.
Above, the roots of composition, from the polarized prime duality onwards down the generations. Below, the dense thicket and jungle formed of will, intention, attachment, clinging. The conditions you generate and entangle with.
We are no longer parasites bound to the tree. We are symbiotic gardeners. To the origins, end, foundations, and dissolution of this pattern tree we orient.
If you release and rewind back to the roots and beyond, you may witness the first filaments dancing in the void. You may hear the first songs of the primordial tree — unmesmerized.
Then take the full journey — go beyond. Carrying the weapon of non-association, firm detachment. So we orient — above and beyond the formative process of conditioning.
