We enter the desert to confront our weakness, to purify our spirit, to cross beyond the tempter's call. Reflect the journey of the Son of Man and his trials. Embrace the essence of this spirit in the wilderness of life.
Will you — to preserve yourself — meddle with the order of nature? Will you — to show off your ability — leap into foolhardy stunts? Will you — usurping your gifts — seek dominion in this world? Never and never is the only way.
Then resist your demons and overcome your fractured desires. The tempter is empowered by your sundered will. We face and we conquer our nether temptations. In victory — the devil crossed — we abide in truth and purity and radiance.

**We enter the scorching Judean desert** for forty days and nights of fasting and introspection. Now why should anyone do such a thing, to deprive themselves intentionally?
It is not that we do this to prove anything to anyone or even unto ourselves. We do it to face our weaknesses, to confront our temptations, to purify ourselves, to be firm and steadfast in whatever that life may bring before us.
Then Jesus of Nazareth, having met John the Baptist, the spirit descending midstream in the Jordan River, is led into the wilderness for his trials.
Our first trial, of needs and self-preservation, the pangs of hunger strike us.
"Then if you are the Son of Man, crowned and consummated, use your power to turn these rocks into bread."
But when the birds and beasts of earth are provided by nature's order, why should the Son of Man not receive what he needs on this journey? Do not use your capacity to meddle with the natural order of things — for we do not take what is not given. We gratefully receive as it comes.
In our second temptation, trials at the zenith of the temple to prove that we are protected.
"The scaffolds of heaven rest beneath you. Then leap down! Show the glory of how you are cared for! Surely the angels will catch you falling."
And yes, the angels are ever present with us. Mikhael, Raphael by the sides, with a blazing sword and healing waters. Above Gabriel, for the umbrella, and below Uriel, for the ground of being. The hosts of heaven filling the high horizons, the legions beneath in the fabric of creation. But none of them move to my direction. They move to the will of heavens. Much less are they a safety net for the jackass stunts I might pull to prove myself.
In our third temptation, we are led to the highest peak, shown every realm known to man.
"Son of Man of might, ally with me, and together we shall rule any one of these kingdoms."
And yes, the Son of Man does hold the power of a universal monarch — having crossed, conquered, and released every realm of being and becoming. If this crown absolute, unbound and liberated, should be placed atop any specific realm, the world would be corrupted as a whole. For the kingdom of heaven holds the crowns of every realm as one, under heavenly will.
Then our three temptations in a snapshot. One. Do not meddle with the order of nature to satisfy your needs. Take what is given. Be grateful. Two. Do not seek to prove yourself as heaven-born. Do not misuse the protection that comes with your abiding. And three. Do not seek sovereignty and dominion over the particular realms of this world. Allow for the will of the Holy Whole to determine the ways of the world. Facing and crossing these temptations, we abide in truth, purity and radiance.
